About Us

Hmong Handwork - PanDau Consignment was started nearly 25 years ago to help new refugees and immigrants.  Hmong women brought items into the Chist Lutheran church office hoping someone would buy them so the women would have some extra dollars to help their family.  Through the years the stitchers have adapted and designed items they thought the American market would embrace.  The items they stitch, design and create use the techniques, talents, and skills they perfected at an early age through the instruction of generations of tradition. The phrase "Pan Dau" is an American adaptation of the Hmong word "Paj ntaub", meaning 'flowery cloth'.

The Consignment Shop

All our items are sold on consignment. Hmong stitchers bring in handmade items to sell and they choose the price they want for their work. When the item is sold, the stitcher will receive 100% of the price she asked for. We serve 150 stitchers who leave items in the shop for sale, so the price often varies on the similar items since each stitcher has placed a different value on their own item.

To Our Supporters - Thank You

We are a non-profit organization, so we are constantly reliant upon our supporters to maintain the store. The space for our store has been donated to us by another non-profit organization, SeAM. We use SeAM's office and often their staff's time to help these Hmong women. Since we do not pay rent and are staffed by volunteers, we do not have to add significantly to the price of the items in out store to pay for our expenses, and can instead keep our prices as low as possible. Consequently, we would like to thank SeAM and our supporters for their time and efforts.

Come And Help Us

We are always on the lookout for new volunteers. If you appreciate textile arts, enjoy meeting new people from different cultures, and are able to offer a couple of hours a month to come in and help our store, we would love to have you. Our biggest requirements of our volunteers are a sense of responsibility and a smile. If you would like to volunteer, call us at 651-293-1261 or send us an email at seam@seam-st.paul.org
